In August 2011 a team of 6 British whitewater kayakers headed to Sri Lanka on a mission to explore the little known whitewater of the central mountain ranges.
The Mission:
To explore the rivers of the central highlands and knuckles mountain range and complete a number of first and second descents.
To identify a new river for rafting to replace the Kelani which is to be dammed for hydropower.
To leave a lasting legacy which will benefit local people. To this end we will spend time with the local rafting and kayaking community teaching advanced safety techniques. We will also report back any suitable rivers for rafting in the hope they will be used for commercial rafting boosting tourism in an area where there is currently little.
To report back on what we find in the UK and inspire others to visit and explore Sri Lanka.
They found a country full of friendly people, spicy food and an abundance of whitewater. And they only explored the western side of the mountains. There is still loads more to explore so check out the River Notes page and book your flights!
